Details
The Rongai Route is the only trail approaching Mount Kilimanjaro from the north, near the Kenyan border. Known for its quiet and less crowded paths, it is an excellent choice for trekkers seeking solitude and breathtaking wilderness
Depart from Arusha and drive to Rongai Gate (1,950m), where your trek begins. Hike through lush rainforest and fields of maize and potatoes, encountering the occasional Colobus monkey along the way. By late afternoon, arrive at Simba Camp (2,620m), situated on the edge of the moorland zone. Enjoy a warm meal and a peaceful evening under the stars.
After breakfast, the trail ascends steadily through the moorland zone, revealing expansive views of the Kenyan plains below. The trek continues to Kikelelwa Camp (3,630m), a scenic site surrounded by giant groundsels and lobelias. Spend the afternoon resting or exploring the area to acclimatize.
Today’s trek is shorter but steeper as you approach Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330m), nestled at the base of the jagged Mawenzi Peak. The dramatic scenery and high-altitude setting provide perfect opportunities for photography. Spend the rest of the day acclimatizing and enjoying the breathtaking views.
Trek across the lunar-like Saddle, a high-altitude desert separating Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. This section is unique, with stark volcanic features and an eerie sense of isolation. After 5-6 hours of hiking, you’ll reach Kibo Hut (4,700m), your base for the summit attempt. Rest early in preparation for the midnight climb.
Wake at midnight for the most challenging and rewarding part of the trek. The climb to Uhuru Peak begins with a steep ascent to Gilman’s Point on the crater rim. As the sun rises, continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), where you’ll experience unparalleled views from the Roof of Africa. After celebrating your achievement, descend to Kibo Hut for a brief rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut (3,720m) for the night.
On the final day, descend through the moorland and lush rainforests back to Marangu Gate (1,860m). Celebrate your achievement with your trekking team, receive your summit certificate, and transfer back to Arusha for a well-deserved rest.
